Baking Sheet
Measuring spoons and cups
Mixing bowl
electric mixer or Potatoe masher
Pie Crust– Homemade or a store-bought frozen pie crust.
Sweet Potatoes– You will need 3 medium sweet potatoes, or you can replace fresh sweet potatoes with a can of yams.
Butter– Melted Butter
Sugar– You can use Granulated Sugar or switch it out for brown sugar
Eggs– Beaten eggs
Milk-Whole milk is best, but you can use any kind of milk of your choice.
Cinnamon and Nutmeg– Cinnamon and nutmeg must have spices when making a sweet potato pie.
Vanilla extract– I suggest using pure vanilla extract and not imitation vanilla. Vanilla extract really enhances the flavor when baking pies.
Place whole sweet potato in pot and cover with water; bring to a boil. Boil until tender when pierced with a fork, about 50 minutes.
Carefully remove potatoes from the pot and run them under cold water. Remove and discard the skin. Skin should slide right off. Break then potatoes in half and add them to a mixing bowl.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Add butter to sweet potatoes and mix together using an electric mixer. Next add sugar, nutmeg. cinnamon, milk, beaten eggs and vanilla extract; beat on medium speed until mixture is smooth. Pour filling into unbaked pie crust.
Bake pie in preheated oven for 55 minutes to 60 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
Remove from oven and let pie cool completely before serving.
Sweet potato can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator or freezer. Wrap pie in plastic wrap or foil and store in the refrigerator for up to three days or in the freezer for up to three months.
To defrost frozen pie, leave pie in refrigerator overnight to defrost.
Sweet potato pie contains milk and eggs, so it is essentially that they be stored in the refrigerator, once pie has completely cooled.
