Southern Tomato Pie Recipe

This Tomato Pie recipe is filled with fresh sliced tomato, basil, onions, topped with a mixture of cheeses and mayonnaise, then baked in a pie shell until golden brown.

This savory Tomato Pie, also known as Duke’s Tomato Pie, is a southern summertime favorite. If you have a garden full of tomatoes growing, Tomato pie is the perfect recipe to use up some of those tomatoes.

What is Tomato Pie?

The Southern tomato pie is a tomato dish from the Southern United States. It consists of a pie shell with a filling of tomatoes, with basil, covered with a topping of grated cheese mixed with mayonnaise.  It is considered a summer dish, to be made when tomatoes are in season.

Equipment

knife– for slicing tomatoes.

Colander– Allow the tomatoes to sit for 10 minutes so any excess juice from the tomatoes will drain. You can also place tomatoes on paper towels, to drain the juice.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400. Slice tomatoes, place in a colander to allow to drain for 10 minutes.
  2. Stir together cheeses and mayonnaise. Layer tomatoes in pie shell. Top with basil, salt and pepper. Spread mayonnaise mixture on top. Bake for 30 minutes, until lightly browned and cheese is melted.
  3. Let pie cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm.

Substitutions

You do not have to use the exact cheeses listed in the recipe. You can use any cheese of your liking, just make sure you have a total of 2 cups of cheese.

Variations

You can make this recipe with chopped tomatoes instead of sliced. You may also add crumble bacon, onion, or different cheeses.

Storage

Leftover tomato pie can be covered with plastic wrap and refrigerated for up to two days. Individual pie slices can be reheated in the microwave.

Tips for making this recipe:

Drain excessive juice from tomatoes using by using a colander or paper towel. This keeps the pie from being too watery.

Grating cheese, yourself is the best option for this recipe, but prepacked shredded will work just fine.

Pie is best served warm but should cool slightly before slicing about 10-15 minutes.
