Easy Candied Yams is an old fashion recipe featuring sweet potatoes, baked with a brown sugar glaze topped with Marshmallows.

Candied yams are an old-fashioned side dish that’s oven baked with warm spices, sugar and butter. It is a popular Thanksgiving side dish. Candied yams are often severed alongside Baked Macaroni and Cheese.

Have you ever wondered when the Candied Yam Recipe was invented?

The oldest recipe for candied yams is from 1889, Cellania writes. Fannie Farmer’s 1918 recipe for “Glazed sweet potatoes” calls for boiling the potatoes before coating them in a sugar syrup with butter and baking “until brown, basting twice with the remaining syrup.”

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. If using sweet potatoes, you will need to boil the potatoes for about 45 minutes or until fork tender. (Cooking time depends on the size of potatoes.) Run under cool water, skin should slide right off sweet potatoes
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (176 degrees Celius). Add Potatoe to a mixing bowl and mash them. Set them aside. (If using can yams drain the yams, add then to a bowl and mash with a Potatoe masher.)
  3. In a saucepan using low heat melt ½ cup of butter (This is one stick of butter). Once butter is melted add the 1 cup of brown sugar. Stir. Then stir in the one teaspoon of cinnamon. Bring to a boil and immediately remove from heat.
  4. Pour brown sugar glaze over potatoes. Stir the glaze into the potatoes. (If adding pecans add them in before adding the glaze.) Add potatoes to baking dish. Top with marshmallows.
  5. Bake in preheated over for 10 minutes until marshmallows have melted. Baking time will depend on your oven. Check after 5 minutes to make sure Marshmallows are not beginning to burn.
